Born into a family of glassmakers, he entered the furnace at a very young age and quickly developed exceptional control of the material. Between the 1940s and 1950s, working first for Seguso and then in his own glass factory, he developed a personal style: compact masses of submerged glass, zoomorphic and abstract shapes crossed by an internal light that defines a sort of glass sculpture. On the one hand it renews the Murano tradition without breaking it, bending classical techniques to a modern sensibility; on the other, it gives objects an almost narrative character, transforming fish, birds and stylized figures into crystallized micro-stories. It is this synthesis of artisan hand and plastic vocation that makes Barbini a central figure in the transition of glass from a decorative artefact to a true artistic medium of the 20th century.
